On Wednesday, at 9:07am, Riverhead Firefighters were alerted to a Signal-13, structure fire, at the 'Snowflake' Ice Cream Shop on West Main Street.

Upon the arrival of the first chief a heavy smoke condition was transmitted. Hose teams from the first arriving engine, forced their way through the front door and advanced toward the fire located somewhere to the rear of the store. The heaviest fire load was found to be in the wall and ceiling of the stores restroom. While the inside team was busy knocking down the flames, a roof team was sent to vent directly over the area, which helped to quickly extinguish the fire.

Approximately twenty-five RFD volunteers responded with two engines, one ladder and the fire police/support truck. The Flanders Fire Department was requested, and confirmed to stand-by at our headquarters. The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps was on stand-by at the scene, and transported one firefighter to the Peconic Bay Medical Center with an ankle injury.

All units were dismissed and the scene turned over to Riverhead fire Marshall's by 10:15am.
