Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving Riverhead Fire Department received a call for a smoke investigation on Nugent Drive in Calverton. The Chiefs responding soon pinpointed the origin of the smoke to the area of the Calverton Shooting Range. Once on premisis a large mulch pile was found burning. An general alarm was then activated as well as a request for 6-2-7, RFD's tanker, to respond. Due to the lack of a water supply tankers from Flanders, Jamesport, Eastport, and Manorville were requested on a mutual aid. Wading River was requested for a standby at RFD Headquarters. A relay with the tankers and a portable tank was set up to supply the tower ladder 6-2-6. The pile was extinguished shortly before noon.
