A fire at the Indian Island county golf course last night damaged the golf cart storage building there and destroyed most of the golf carts stored within the building.

A 911 call reported the fire at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday. First Assistant Chief JR Renten found smoke and flames coming out of west end of the building, according to a Riverhead Fire Department spokesperson.
The first arriving units made a quick stop of the fire, but most of the golf carts inside were destroyed, said Riverhead Fire Chief Joe Hartmann.

“We responded with three engines, two ladder trucks, a tanker and fire police,” Hartmann said. Flanders Fire Department also responded with a tanker, he said. PSEG was also on scene to cut off power to the building, he said. About 50 firefighters answered the call. Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance also was on scene.

The Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating, Hartmann said.
