Riverhead firefighters made a quick stop of a fire in a house on Peninsula Path off Merritts Pond in Riverhead last night.

A family of four was safely evacuated without injury, Riverhead Fire Chief Joe Hartmann said.

One firefighter was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of a “minor burn,” the chief said. He was treated and released, Hartmann said.
“The whole east side of the house was on fire,” the chief said. Firefighters went in, got into the attic area where the fire was concentrated, and knocked it down, Hartmann said.

“We made a good stop on it,” he said.

The Riverhead Town fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire, which left the single-family home uninhabitable, at least temporarily, according to the chief.

“Everyone was out of the house when we arrived,” he said.
About 60 firefighters responded to the call, which came in to Riverhead Fire Department at 9:03 p.m., Hartmann said. The department responded with three engines, two ladder trucks and fire police vehicles.

Firefighters were released from the scene about an hour after their arrival, he said.

“We’ve been busy,” Hartmann said.

Last week, firefighters battled a blaze at a two-story commercial building on Pulaski Street that destroyed two apartments.
