August 26, 2025

Last night, Riverhead firefighters gathered for a hands-on drill focusing on vehicle fires. Car fires can be extremely dangerous — they involve high heat, toxic smoke, flammable fluids, and even the potential for explosions.
During the training, our crews practiced:
Proper engine placement to protect firefighters and the public
Approaching the vehicle safely from upwind and uphill when possible
Using hose lines to quickly knock down heavy fire
Forcible entry techniques to reach hidden flames inside the car
Team communication and accountability on the fireground
These drills are an essential part of keeping our skills sharp. Every scenario gives us the chance to prepare for the unexpected, so when the real call comes in, your Riverhead firefighters are ready to respond safely and effectively.
A big thank you to all the members who participated and to our officers for leading the training!
