| After a horrible 0-5 start to their season, the Riverhead Fire Department Softball Team ran off a 17-2 streak over their next 19 games, to claim the 2008 Brookhaven Town Softball League Championship. After a few position changes to start their sixth game, the team really started to gel. It took a few games for some of the seasoned veterans to finally shake off the rust. They had a good mix of talent, young and old (Like Ty Cobb). Once the team got on a roll, they basically dominated every team they faced by very lopsided scores. The team was comprised of many members in the 40+ age category, with a sprinkling of younglings. The members of the Riverhead Fire Department Softball Team would like to thank the entire department, and all our fans, for their support over the course of the season. A championship celebration was held at our new headquarters back in April, and was attended by about forty players, their families, and friends. To briefly recap, after an 0-5 start, the team finished the year with a 17-7 record, beating teams from Coram, Center Moriches, Ridge, Holbrook, and Centereach. Then moved into the playoffs and beat Holbrook, Stonybrook and Center Moriches to win the League Championship and capping off a great season! Way to go guys! Photo by Lt. Thomas Pipczynski Jr |
