April 24, 2010

On Friday afternoon, at 3:58pm, the Riverhead Fire Department was dispatched for a Signal-24 on a Signal-12, mutual aid for a brush fire, to the Flanders Fire District. Our designated mutual-aid GI-Rig 6-2-12A responded along with Chiefs 6-2-32 and 6-2-33, while 6-2-30 and 6-2-31 remained in-district. The 'Stump-Jumper' trucks made several trips into the woods and went Signal-5, end of alarm, at 5:15pm.

During the mutual aid call, at 4:39pm, the volunteers pagers activated for a second alarm, a reported Signal-13, structure fire, on West Lane in Aquebogue, and for a third, a Signal-23, chiefs investigation, for a automatic fire alarm, at John Wesley Village II. Chief 6-2-30 immediately directed crews on Engines 6-2-2 and 6-2-3 to respond to the West Lane call, along with Tower Ladder 6-2-6 and Support Truck 6-2-9. Chief 6-2-31 was directed to respond to JWV II.

First on-scene at the West Lane call, 6-2-30, found a furnace on-fire in a greenhouse. Firefighters used a 1-3/4" hose line off Engine 6-2-2 to put out the fire, (see photos below) while all other arriving apparatus was given a Signal-9, standby at the roadside for further instruction, order upon their arrival. Chief 6-2-31 reported the trouble at JWV II to be a burnt steak dinner. The West Lane incident was turned over to 6-0-42, the Riverhead Town Fire Marshall, for further investigation, and all units were dismissed by 4:54pm.

Just two-hours later, at 7:11pm, we were called out once again, this time for a Signal-23, helicopter landing zone, in the old 'Suffolk Life' parking lot. The crew of a Stony Brook University ambulance decided their patient needed expedited transport to Stony Brook Medical Center. A Suffolk County Police 'Med-Evac' unit was then called for, and a landing site needed to be secured. All the Chiefs responded to this safety detail, along with Engines 6-2-3 and 6-2-4, and Fire Police traffic units 6-2-10 and 6-2-10A. All were returning to stations by 7:38pm.
