| On Sunday, at 11:45 AM, the Riverhead Fire Department was activated for a reported Signal-13, structure fire, in the area of Reeves Avenue near Roanoke Avenue. It was called-in as a pool house with smoke showing. It had been snowing all morning and the roadways were getting very slick. The first Chiefs in the area could not locate the fire, and it ended up going unfounded, a false alarm.
Just then, at 11:55 AM, another call came in for a Signal-23, heavy rescue, on Osborne Avenue just South of Route 58. First units on-scene reported that a Riverhead Town Police car was involved, and had skidded up onto a resident's front yard after the collision. The driver of the other vehicle was trapped and needed to be extricated using 'Hurst Jaws-of-Life' tools to remove the door.
Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps then transported both drivers to Peconic Bay Medical Center, for further medical treatment.
Shortly after all units were returned to quarters, a Signal-9 was called, for all available firefighters to report to and stand-by at both Department Headquarters, and Station 1 in Polish Town. Dozens of volunteers, in two shifts, spent the next 18+ hours in-house, reducing response-time considerably in the event of an emergency.
