Around 12:45 pm, Wednesday June 22, Riverhead Fire Department was dispatched on a signal 13, structure fire. The First Chiefs on the scene reported a working structure fire and asked for a reactivation as a signal 13-35 (working structure fire). The first engine on the scene, 6-2-14, pulled up on a fully involved detached garage. They immediately stretched a 2-1/2" line as well as both 1-3/4" attack lines for an exterior attack. The second engine on scene, 6-2-2, hit the nearest hydrant and supplied water to 6-2-14. While fighting the blaze the structure collapsed. After the flames were brought under control, a nearby Riverhead Highway backhoe was brought in to help spread debris to minimize the chances for a rekindle.
Flanders Fire Department was called in on a mutual aid to standby at RFD Headquarters. While standing by they received a call for an automatic alarm, to which they responded with Riverhead chief 6-2-32.
