By Firefighter Brian Raynor
July 29, 2011

Thursday July 28th was an extremely busy day. The day included 3 signal 23's and a signal 13.

The first call of the day came in around 10:30 AM for an odor of gas on Church Lane in Aquebogue. Units responding to the scene were 6-2-1, 6-2-4, and 6-2-9. 6-2-2 was dispatched to standby at headquarters. Upon arrival firefighters found a smell of propane which was caused by a 100 lb tank used for the home. The house was ventilated with the assistance of fans and a signal 5 was given.

Simultaneously to the Church Lane call an automatic alarm was sounded for the Riverhead Charter School. The report came in that 3 detectors were going off. 6-2-2 responded with its crew from headquarters to handle the alarm. A signal 5 was given after the alarms were found to be false.

The third alarm of the day was a signal 23, stong odor of gas within the residence, at around 12:15 and located on Roanoke Ave. by the Rte 58 traffic circle. Firefighters found the house filled with a strong odor of gas and immediately began opening windows and using fans to dissipate the gas. It was later found to have come from the stove which was inadvertently turned on. Units 6-2-1, 6-2-4, 6-2-10 and 6-2-10A responded.

The final alarm of the day started as a chief's investigation on Elton Place for a tree that fell across a power line. The duty chiefs quickly responded and assessed the situation. They could smell a faint smell of smoke and decided that they would need the thermal imaging camera to see where it could possibly be originating from. A request for a signal 13, structure fire, was given by chief 6-2-33. The crews off engines 6-2-1 and 6-2-4 entered the home to locate the odor. A minimally high reading was found behind a 2nd floor wall. When the wall was opened to investigate, a fire within the wall was immediately found. Crews had two 1-3/4" handlines stretched into the home and began attacking the fire. Ventilation crews were also on the a low roof over the entrance helping locate fire from the outside. Fire was found in the walls, 1st floor ceiling and attic. The fire was extinguished and the firefighters busy night ended around 12:30 AM on July 29th. Units 6-2-1, 6-2-2, 6-2-4, 6-2-9, 6-2-10, 6-2-10A and 6-2-96 responded.
