Standby for Departments Hurt by Hurricane Sandy

By Firefighter Brian Raynor
November 26, 2012

Riverhead Fire Department was asked to assist with a standby for the areas ravaged by Hurricane Sandy. During a 60 hour period Riverhead sent crews and engine 6-2-2 to Island Park and Long Beach. Both departments were hit hard with losses to both equipement and manpower. Both departments had their manpower drastically depleted as most members have been displaced. Riverhead sent crews of roughly 6-8 firefighters for each 12 hour shift. The shifts were quite with the exception of a reported structure fire in Long Beach. Riverhead has been asked to send another crew for a few shifts in the middle of this week as well.

Units: 6-2-2
