Early Morning Large Mulch Fire

By Firefighter Brian Raynor
November 19, 2013

Riverhead Fire Department was called to the scene of a Signal 23, mulch fire, off Horton Ave. Immediately the call was made to mutual aid tankers from neighboring departments. 6-2-31 relayed a size up which stated "it's going good". A portable tank was set up to assist in the relay and keep water flowing to the fire. The Tankers went into operation filling at the hydrant and dumping into the tank. Ladder 6-2-5 was used to flow a large volume of water on the top of the pile. The wind was strong, hampering extinguishment and increasing the risk of spread. The call lasted close to 6 hours and was supported by 7 departments.

Units: 6-2-1, 6-2-2, 6-2-4, 6-2-5. 6-2-7, 6-2-10A, 6-2-30, 6-2-31, 6-2-32, 6-2-33, 6-2-96

Mutual Aid: Jamesport, Flanders, Manorville, Eastport, Westhampton, Hampton Bays, Ridge
