Riverhead firefighters spend much of the night battling a large mulch fire in Calverton.
The alarm was sounded at 2:10 a.m. and firefighters were at the scene until about 5 o’clock, Riverhead First Assistant Chief Joe Hartmann said. The fire was at Guillo Construction on Middle Country Road in Calverton, Hartmann said.
“It was probably sparked by heat from the stumps and stuff waiting to be ground,” the chief said. “The flames were going pretty good when we got there,” he said.
One witness told RiverheadLOCAL the flames in the sky were visible from Route 58. A smoky odor spread across Calverton and western Riverhead Town early this morning. About 30 Riverhead volunteers responded with two engines, two ladder trucks and a tanker, Hartmann said. Flanders Fire Department also responded with a tanker, he said.
There were no injuries, Hartmann said. |
