November 13, 2025

On Wednesday evening, Riverhead Fire Department responded to a significant barn fire on Sound Avenue involving two structures and multiple hazards including farm equipment, vehicles, propane and diesel tanks.

Thanks to the quick actions of our firefighters, mutual aid partners, and first responders on scene, crews were able to bring the fire under control and safely evacuate 21 pigs from the burning barn. Nineteen of those animals survived thanks to the coordinated effort and fast action during extremely difficult conditions.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the following mutual aid departments and agencies for their assistance:

🔥 Flanders FD
🔥 Wading River FD
🔥 Jamesport FD
🔥 Mattituck FD
🔥 Hampton Bays FD
🔥 Eastport FD
🔥 Manorville FD
🚑 Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps
🚑 Mutual aid ambulance support from Cutchogue FD

Additionally, thank you to Ridge FD for standing by at our headquarters during the incident.

More than 75 firefighters operated on scene for several hours to contain the fire, protect nearby structures, and assist with the animal rescue operations. Their professionalism and teamwork exemplify the strength of our fire service community.

Thank you to all who responded and supported operations last night.
